La formation actuelle s'articule autour des membres fondateurs et amis d'enfance Anthony Kiedis (chant) et Flea (guitare basse|basse), auxquels se joignent en 1988 Chad Smith (Batterie (instrument)|batterie) et John Frusciante (guitare) qui, après avoir quitté le groupe à deux occasions, le rejoint une troisième fois en 2019. La musique des Red Hot Chili Peppers se caractérise par le mélange de plusieurs genres musicaux, tels le funk rock, le rock alternatif, le funk metal et le rap rock.
